I've gotten some great feedback on the article on my site last week about the dirty lies told about content marketing and SEO. If you haven't read it yet, click the link – it will make my comments today make more sense.
If you hadn't figured it out yet, I don't believe that content and SEO are opposed to each other! They're two halves of a whole strategy for getting noticed by Google and other search engines. Without quality, compelling content, SEO is like putting lipstick on a pig – it's still a pig, no matter how red its lips are! And without savvy SEO strategies, great content is going to take a long time to be noticed by search engines, much less the people querying those search engines.
I have to laugh – I've been seeing the term "content optimization" lately as a way of merging these two concepts together. So as I was writing this, I thought I'd do a little research on Google to see what comes up on top of Google search for the term content optimization.
Oh my goodness – some of the results were downright scary! There were sites with really good Google rankings that honestly had bad content (sentences with enough errors that they just didn't make sense) that recommended practices like keyword stuffing in the article and in the tags of the page.
More than ever, as content and information marketing become the way to reach people, quality content matters, as does knowing the techniques to get your post at the top of Google search. And as Google is refined further and further to weed out weak content, being able to write quality content that is optimized to stand out in a Google search is a critical skill in your business.
